Art and Design

Curriculum Intent:

Our art curriculum is founded on the principle that every child is inherently creative. We seek to create an inclusive and inspiring learning environment that encourages exploration, imagination, and the celebration of individual artistic expressions.

Our D&T curriculum is founded on the principle that hands-on design and making experiences are crucial for developing childrens’ creativity and critical thinking. We aim to nurture a culture of innovation, where children are encouraged to explore, prototype, and create solutions to real-world problems.

Implementation

Art:

  • To provide opportunities for children to explore their creativity, experiment with various art mediums, and develop their unique artistic voices.
  • To promote self-expression and emotional intelligence through artistic creations, allowing children to communicate their thoughts, feelings, and ideas visually.
  • To foster an appreciation for various art forms, art history, and diverse cultural expressions, enriching childrens’ understanding of global art traditions.
  • To enhance fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination through hands-on art activities, supporting overall motor development.
  • To boost students’ confidence in their artistic abilities and develop a positive self-image through successful art experiences.
  • To encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills as students plan and execute art projects, making creative choices along the way

Design and Technology:

  • To provide children with opportunities to explore their creative potential through design thinking and practical making experiences and develop innovative solutions.
  • To equip and teach children practical making skills, including the safe and proficient use of tools and materials.
  • To raise awareness about sustainability issues and promote responsible design choices that have a positive impact on the environment and society.
  • To integrate digital technologies in the design and making process, preparing students for the technological demands of the 21st century.
  • To encourage collaboration and effective communication in design teams, fostering teamwork and empathy.

Curriculum Impact:

Our D&T curriculum encourages enquiry-based learning, where students ask questions, explore possibilities, and experiment with different design solutions. We prioritise hands-on projects that involve designing, prototyping, and creating tangible products, allowing students to see the real-world impact of their designs.

We foster a supportive and engaging artistic learning environment, we aim to empower our children to become confident artists and appreciators of the arts, contributing to their overall growth and development as well-rounded individuals. We actively involve parents, artists, and local art organisations to enrich children’s art experiences and showcase their creations to a broader audience.
